Foremost, I am an Early Years teacher with a passion for learning and growing with each child I teach. I have been teaching for the past 7 1/2 years, with experience as a special needs teacher outside of London, England, substitute teaching in Winnipeg's inner city, as well as 6 years as a Kindergarten-Grade 2 multiage teacher in St.Malo, Manitoba (where I currently still teach!). It is during my teaching experience that I realized how important it is to teach our children strategies to be mindful (of self and others), ways to relax and breathe (and when to use these strategies), as well as a love for health and wellness... this led me to pursue children's yoga certification. In May 2015, I received mini yogis certification with Shana Meyerson at Yoga Public (check out her link, she is amazing!). I also received Cosmic Kids yoga certification with Jaime Amor in January 2016 (another fantastic resource, especially for at-home children's yoga videos!). Finally, I am also working on my Yoga Calm certification, which I hope to complete by August 2016 (this is a great resource for educators, social workers, and counsellors who would like to integrate yoga into their daily work with kids-check out the link!).
I love to learn and can't seem to stop! :) I received my Bachelor of Health Sciences from the University of Western Ontario in 2006, my Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta in 2008, and my Post-Baccalaureate of Education from the University of Manitoba in 2015. Next, I hope to pursue my Masters of Education with a focus on mindfulness in the classroom. Fingers crossed that I will be accepted! My post-secondary studies have been recognized with awards, including an Undergraduate Academic Scholarship, a Celebration of Excellence, and the Univeristy of Western Ontario Gold Medal.
I began to practice yoga in 2007, when I started working at Lululemon on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton... Believe it or not, I was hired and had not yet touched a yoga mat! I fell in love with yoga instantly. Being not-so sporty and terrible with hand-eye coordination sports (so... pretty much all sports), I loved yoga for its non-competitiveness. Yoga also taught me how to relax my mind... something that I always struggled with, especially being a known perfectionist and worry-wart! The breathing and relaxation techniques have since been incorporated into my daily life and help me tremendously when I am under stress. In 2009, I moved to Winnipeg and was fortunate to become a part of the Lululemon Polo Park team! Being a part of the Lululemon community in Edmonton and Winnipeg played a huge part in my love for yoga, as it gave me the opportunity to experience a variety of yoga styles, teachers, and studios in the local communities.
In in my spare time, I love to keep busy! I enjoy doing different kinds of yoga (hot hatha and restorative being my favourites!) and of course, learning about teaching children's yoga. I also enjoy spending time at the lake in Northwestern Ontario (Fort Frances and Kenora) with my boyfriend, dog, and family. Reading, baking, skiing, golfing and crocheting are also my favourite ways to spend a rainy day. ❤️
